In the space of nine months, every major AI company gave its product away free to American K-12 teachers. OpenAI in November. Google through Workspace for Education. Anthropic on July 14, 2026.
If you are the parent of a 6-to-12-year-old, that raises one practical question, and it is not the one the headlines answer: what does this actually change for my child?
The short version, and the reason this guide exists:
Every one of these free programs is for the adult in the room. Not one of them gives your child anything they can use at home. Claude is 18-and-over and enforces it. ChatGPT for Teachers states plainly that the plan "is not for students." Gemini reaches under-13s only inside a school-managed account your family does not control.
So the AI showing up in your child's classroom this year is your child's teacher's AI. Whatever your child uses at home is still entirely your call โ and still entirely your job to set up. This guide covers what actually launched, what it changes in practice, what to ask at your next parent-teacher conference, and what to do at home.

Three different companies, three different products, one identical design decision: give it to the teacher, not the child.
That is not an accident of caution. It is the strategy. Which is worth understanding, because it tells you what to expect next.
Why they are all courting teachers first
This is a replay of a move that already worked once.
Around 2012, Google began selling Chromebooks to American schools at prices no competitor could match, bundled with free Classroom and Docs. By 2020 Chromebooks were the majority of devices in US K-12 schools. A generation of students grew up inside Google's tools, then walked into their first jobs already fluent in them. Google never had to sell Workspace to those graduates. School had done it.
The AI companies are running the same play with a shorter clock. A teacher who plans lessons in one assistant for three school years will not casually switch. A student who writes every lab report in one tool arrives at university already trained. Free is not generosity here; it is customer acquisition with a very long payback window.
Anthropic's version is the most infrastructural of the three, and worth a closer look because it hints at where this goes.
The standards-alignment layer
Claude for Teachers connects to something called Learning Commons โ a database of academic standards for all 50 states, and, underneath each standard, the smaller competencies it is built from and the order students typically learn them.
The practical difference: when a fifth-grade teacher in Texas asks for help planning a lesson, the assistant is not guessing at what "fifth-grade math" means in the abstract. It is working inside that state's actual sequence. It also plugs into real curricula schools already use, including OpenSciEd for science and Illustrative Mathematics, plus nine classroom platforms โ ASSISTments, Brisk Teaching, Canva Education, Coteach, Diffit, Eedi, MagicSchool, Snorkl and TeachFX.
For parents, the takeaway is simpler than the plumbing: the AI your child's teacher uses is increasingly aware of your specific state's curriculum. Lesson plans generated this way are less generic than what you would get from a plain chatbot โ and considerably harder for a parent to distinguish from teacher-written material.
What this actually changes for your child
1. Homework got harder to police, and it was already hard
The scenario every parent and teacher recognises: a child photographs a worksheet, sends it to a chatbot, and receives both the answer and a plausible explanation in seconds.
None of the teacher programs changes this. Free teacher AI does not remove student AI. What it does change is the other side of the desk โ teachers now have tools that generate fresh problem sets on demand, which makes "the answer key is already on the internet" a smaller problem, and detection a slightly different game.
What matters at home is unchanged and unglamorous: a child who has never talked about why shortcutting the thinking costs them something will take the shortcut. That conversation is a parent's job, and it works far better before the homework crisis than during it.
2. Your child may meet AI at school before you have introduced it at home
For many families, the first serious encounter will not be a decision you made. It will be a Tuesday when a teacher demonstrates an AI tool to the class.
There is nothing wrong with that โ but it means the framing your child gets first may not be yours. Children who arrive having already made something with AI, and having already caught it being wrong, treat the classroom demo very differently from children meeting it cold.
3. The privacy question moved into the school
Anthropic's K-12 terms include a data processing addendum written to comply with FERPA, and state that Claude for Teachers data is not used to train models. OpenAI makes similar commitments for its teacher tier.
Note the important asterisk in Anthropic's own documentation: whether and how educational data may be used is ultimately determined by your district and state policies. The vendor sets a floor. Your district decides what actually happens. Those are two different questions, and only one of them is answered on a company's website.
Five questions worth asking your child's school
Not confrontational ones. These are the questions that get useful answers.
- "Which AI tools are teachers using, and are students using any of them directly?" The teacher-facing answer is usually easy. The student-facing answer is the one that matters for consent.
- "If my child uses an AI tool at school, what of theirs is stored, and for how long?" Ask specifically about work products and chat transcripts, not just names and emails.
- "What is the school's rule on AI for homework?" Schools vary enormously โ some ban it, some require disclosure, some teach with it. Your household rule works better when it does not contradict the school's.
- "How are teachers checking AI-generated material before students see it?" Standards-aligned does not mean error-free. Somebody should be reading it.
- "Is there an opt-out, and what does my child do instead?" A good answer here tells you how seriously the school has thought this through.
What to actually do at home
The honest answer is that the school programs do not create a to-do for parents. They create a timing problem: your child will form a first impression of AI somewhere, and home is the better place for it.
Three things, in order of how much they matter.
First: let them catch AI being wrong
This is the single highest-value thing a 6-to-12-year-old can learn about AI, and it takes fifteen minutes. Ask an image generator for a picture of hands, or of a shop sign covered in words. Count the fingers together. Try to read the sign.
A child who has personally watched AI produce six fingers with total confidence has learned something no lecture delivers: it is not lying, and it is not thinking. It is guessing well. That single experience does more for their judgement than any list of rules.
Second: make them the one giving instructions
There is a large difference between a child who asks AI for answers and a child who directs AI to make something. The first is consuming. The second is the skill that will still matter in ten years.
It does not require special software. Ask them to describe a scene precisely enough that an image generator produces what is actually in their head. They will fail, adjust, and try again โ which is the entire lesson.
Third: give it structure, so it is not a one-off
Most families do one AI activity, enjoy it, and never return, because nobody knows what the second one should be. A sequence solves that.

A short list, because worry is a finite resource:
- "AI will replace my child's teacher." Nothing in these launches points that way; they are lesson-planning and grading tools. We wrote about what AI genuinely cannot do in teaching.
- "My child will fall behind if they don't start now." A 7-year-old is not behind. The skills that matter here โ asking good questions, noticing when something is wrong โ are developmental, not technical.
- "I need to learn all these tools first." You need to be in the room. You do not need to be the expert. The best moment in most family AI sessions is the parent saying "huh, I don't know why it did that either."
Frequently asked questions
Can my child use Claude for Teachers?
No. It is for verified US K-12 educators only, consistent with Anthropic's 18-and-over policy. Consumer Claude also requires users to be 18+, and Anthropic actively enforces this with age verification and disables accounts showing signs of underage use. See our full parent review of Claude.
Can my child use ChatGPT for Teachers?
No. OpenAI states the plan "is not for students." Consumer ChatGPT requires users to be 13+, and 13-17 year olds are supposed to have parental permission โ which still leaves most primary-school children out.
So is there any AI my 8-year-old can legally use?
Yes โ tools built for children rather than adapted from adult products, and tools where a parent operates the account. That is the distinction that actually matters, and it is why we maintain a reviewed directory of kid-safe AI tools with age ratings on each one.
Should I opt my child out of school AI use?
That depends on what the school is actually doing, which is why the five questions above come first. Blanket opt-out from teacher-side use (lesson planning, grading support) rarely makes sense. Student-side use is a real decision, and you are entitled to make it.
Does the free teacher access mean my child's data trains AI models?
Both Anthropic and OpenAI say teacher-tier data is not used for model training, and Anthropic's K-12 addendum is written to comply with FERPA. But Anthropic also notes that district and state policy determines how educational data may be used โ so the binding answer for your family comes from your district, not from a vendor page.
My child's teacher is using AI to write feedback. Is that bad?
Not inherently. A teacher who uses AI to draft feedback and then edits it is doing what teachers have always done with templates. A teacher who sends unread AI output is not. Question 4 above is how you find out which.
